Meditation

 Meditation

Although the mind helps us to reason and to think creatively, if we do not learn to switch it off, it can overwhelm us with critical thoughts, fears and the other people’s opinions. Meditation can bring relief from these anxieties by helping us to silence our inner chatter, to recognise and dismiss negative thoughts and to create a feeling of inner peace.

People have used meditation for thousands of years in their quest for inner harmony. Meditation improves concentration, increases self-awareness and enables us to combat stress by helping us relax and cope. It shows how to focus on the present moment and not to worry so much about the future or ruminate about the past.

The practice of meditation is much easier and simpler than most people believe it to be. The beginner’s anxiety about doing it correctly, the right way, is what creates the difficulty. However, there is no one right way to meditate. Whenever we are relaxed, when our mind is quiet and observant, when we are not reflexively engaged in thought, we are meditating. We could be sitting cross-legged on the floor with our back straight, or in a chair, or lying down, or in any other comfortable position. We could be in a meditative space whilst being engaged on an activity that we give our fullest attention to. We could be focused on washing up the dishes, gardening, walking, or any other type of activity and be totally engrossed in the activity which is also a type of meditation. Whatever position or activity we are in, the observant, aware, quiet mind is a meditating mind. Finding the harmony within is key.
